Halibut fishing starts getting good in Mid-May in
Queen Charlotte Strait. Taylor Bank is an easy spot to get to though it can
be hot and cold. Deserter’s
Island, Pine Island are some other areas to fish for halibut.
Good salmon fishing starts mid-June and lasts to end of August. Coho
start end of June. Rain can start around the 1st of Sept though usually
fairly good to mid to late September.
Needle fish hoochies work well in sandy area. #7 wonder spoons work
well when pilchards are around. Lime green and green/white coyote spoons
work well. Cut plug can work well if you have experience. Baits seem
to have gotten smaller, so medium size herring would work well.
Gordon Group, Castle Point, Hardy, Duval Point, Masterman Island are
areas to fish Chinook. To leave from Port Hardy, you can fish anywhere
from 3-30 miles depending on where the fish are biting. Make sure you
stop in at the local tackle shops unless you are taking a fishing charter.
Fishing in the winter is hard because the weather is pretty ugly, however,
if you must fish in the winter than the Quatsino side
is your best bet.
